It takes a smart person to play dumb -- and Dwighter is a genius. In the third book of her Backup Superhero series, Kayla Hicks paints a surprising portrait of Dwighter -- from the accident that left him with voices in his head to his drinking to drown the voices, and, ultimately, the lack of respect shown to him by the lowest-of-the-low level-D superheroes. To his credit, Dwighter maintains his sense of morality through the mess his life has become, and he is determined to see his mission through. Dwighter has enough self-awareness to have realized that "he is known as the drunk backup superhero that no one can count on," and yet he wisely uses this to his advantage as the story unfolds. It's quite a clever device from author Kayla Hicks. The result is a surprising take on a high stakes mission that threatens to undermine the very foundation of the Superhero League itself. Kayla Hicks has done a wonderful job with her Backup Superhero series, and I enjoyed the entertaining escapisms of each tale. I sure hope she continues the adventures of the Backup Superheroes...
