How to Build an Audience on Social Media (Without Going Viral or Burning Out)

Knowing how to build an audience on social media as an author authentically is key
Let’s be honest — most of us didn’t sign up to be influencers.
We just wanted to share our work, connect with people who care, and maybe grow a platform that helps us sell books, ideas, or services.
But somewhere along the way, the internet told us we needed to chase virality. Post five times a day. Dance on camera. Game the algorithm.
I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to go viral to build an audience.
You need to be valuable, visible, and consistent.
That’s it.
Here’s what’s worked for me — and what will work for you if you stick with it:
1. Choose One Platform to Start
Don’t spread yourself thin trying to be everywhere. Pick one platform that feels natural and where your ideal audience already hangs out.
Master that space. Learn the culture. Build your voice.
Growth comes from depth, not just reach.
2. Make Your Bio Crystal Clear
In a world of short attention spans, your bio is your elevator pitch.
Who are you?
What do you do?
Who do you help?
Why should someone follow you?
Confusion repels. Clarity attracts.
3. Define Your Content Pillars
Want people to follow you and remember why they followed you?
Stick to 2–3 core topics. These are your content pillars.
Mine might be:
Writing and publishing advice
Audience building for authors
Creative mindset
These pillars give you focus and make your content easier to create — and easier to follow.
4. Teach, Don’t Pitch
The best way to grow is to help people solve small problems.
Create content that:
Educates
Inspires
Entertains
Sparks conversation
If you’re always trying to sell, people tune out. If you’re always offering value, people lean in.
5. Engage More Than You Broadcast
This is social media, not a billboard.
Talk to people. Leave thoughtful comments. Join real conversations.
Engagement builds relationships, and relationships build your audience.
6. Show Up Consistently (Not Constantly)
You don’t need to post every day.
You don’t need to burn out trying to go viral.
But you do need to be consistent.
Even if that means 3 posts a week and 10 minutes a day commenting. Small, steady effort adds up.
7. Be a Human, Not a Brand
Document your journey. Share what you’re learning. Let people see the process.
Polished perfection isn’t relatable.
Authenticity is.
People follow people.
8. Make It Easy to Go Deeper
Once someone follows you, make sure they know what to do next.
That might be:
Subscribing to your newsletter
Downloading your freebie
Grabbing your book
Reading your latest blog post
Always guide the next step. Don’t make them guess.
9. Be Patient. This Is a Long Game.
Audience building is like gardening.
You plant, water, and wait.
Some posts won’t land. Some will surprise you. Keep showing up.
If you’re clear, helpful, and consistent, your people will find you.
You don’t need 100,000 followers. You need the right ones.
The ones who care about your work. The ones who’ll buy your books. The ones who’ll cheer for you.
Focus on connection — not just attention — and your audience will grow.
