What you need to know as a new writer

3 min read

As a brand new writer, we often start out with the highest of ambitions. Dreams of being recognized for our hard efforts. Speaking as someone who has been in your shoes, I thought you should know these few things straight out of the gate.

  1. You can't please everyone: Just like everyone has a genre that they particularly enjoy reading, most readers have a style of writing they enjoy reading. The simple fact is, no matter how hard you try, you aren't going to be able to please every reader that comes across your work. Every reader (even you and I) start a book with preconceived expectations, whether we know we do or not. Just know that you have created the best version of your work and be proud of what you have accomplished.

  2. Tell your Own Stories: As much as we aspire to be like so many great authors before us, the truth is, everyone has a great story in them and it's unique to you. You have varying perspectives, ideas, and experiences that are going to make your story stand out from all of the others. Yes, it is helpful to see what things work well for those other authors, but take them as stylistic advice.

  3. The first novel you publish isn't the most successful: No matter how hard you try to drum up interest or market, you are still a brand new face to readers. Unless you have a buddy in the book business, it is dedication and perseverance that get the word out there about your book. And what helps, even more, is making more books. There is this long game aspect I have talked about before that many authors forget about. You are gaining an audience, which naturally takes time. You are building your brand. Once your get three or four books out there it gets easier. Why is this? Because, you get that one reader who takes a chance on your free book promotion and loves your writing, and guess what? They then want more and will possibly buy your other books.

  4. You are the key to success: I can not say this enough. You are the key to getting your book in front of readers. It's not simply about having a successful book launch. You need to consider the before (even when the book isn't finished), at launch, and after the book is released (keep getting the word out there). If you aren't the one telling people about your book, who will? Have your friends and family tell other people they know about it. Market and make connections on social media.

As scary as it is to push that book baby out of the nest, you can do it with enough determination and preparation. Just remember, instant fame on your first book is like winning the lottery. Don't be discouraged, it takes time.
