How to Market Your Books on Facebook

5 min read

Facebook is still a powerful space for readers, reader groups, and so much more

Facebook might not be the trendiest platform out there, but it remains one of the most powerful marketing tools for authors, especially if you’re looking to connect with readers, build community, and move books without chasing algorithms all day.

If you’ve been overlooking Facebook or feel like you’re just shouting into the void, this article will help you shift your strategy and start using the platform with intention.

1. Start With Your Author Page (and Optimize It)

Your author page is your storefront on Facebook. It doesn’t need to be flashy, but it does need to be clear.

  • Use a professional author photo and cover image.

  • Update your bio with a hook that tells readers who you are and what you write.

  • Add a link to your website, newsletter, or storefront.

  • Pin a post that introduces your work or showcases your bestselling book.

This isn’t just about appearances — it’s about making your page a useful resource for new readers who discover you through posts or ads.

2. Create Valuable, Engaging Content (Not Just “Buy My Book” Posts)

People don’t scroll through Facebook to be sold to — they want stories, insights, and connection.

Here’s what works:

  • Behind-the-scenes content: Share your writing process, workspace, character sketches, or research tidbits.

  • Reader engagement posts: Ask questions like “Which trope do you never get tired of?” or “What’s your favorite book with a twist ending?”

  • Quotes and excerpts: Short, punchy lines from your book can hook people fast.

  • Live readings or Q&As: These get more reach and allow you to connect in real time.

Think of your Facebook page as an extension of your author brand — part social, part storytelling, part soft-sell.

3. Join (and Engage in) Facebook Groups

Some of the best book marketing happens off your page. Facebook Groups are where niche communities thrive.

Join groups for:

  • Readers in your genre

  • Self-published authors

  • Book promo and review swaps

Important: Don’t join a group just to spam your link. Contribute to discussions, offer value, and build genuine relationships. When it’s time to mention your book, it will feel natural — and readers will be more receptive.

You can also create your own reader group, which becomes a powerful space to launch books, share exclusives, and foster superfans.

4. Run Targeted Facebook Ads (If You’re Ready)

Facebook ads are a paid strategy, but when used right, they can be game-changing.

  • Start small — $5/day is plenty to test.

  • Promote a lead magnet (like a free novella) to grow your email list.

  • Retarget warm audiences: newsletter subscribers, Facebook followers, or visitors to your website.

  • Use ads to boost high-performing organic posts or launch announcements.

The key is knowing your audience and having a clear goal. If you’re not ready for ads yet, that’s okay. Organic content and community-building still go a long way.

5. Use Facebook Events for Launches and Milestones

Got a new release, cover reveal, or book birthday? Turn it into a Facebook Event.

  • Invite your followers and encourage them to share it.

  • Post teasers leading up to the day.

  • Go live during the event with a reading, Q&A, or giveaway.

This creates momentum and gives your launch an extra push with built-in engagement tools.

6. Repurpose Your Content to Save Time

You’re likely already creating content for Instagram, your newsletter, or X. Repackage that for Facebook:

  • Turn a newsletter intro into a post.

  • Use a tweet as a caption for your book cover graphic.

  • Share your Instagram Reels to your Facebook page.

Batching and repurposing content helps you stay consistent without adding to your workload.

7. Track What’s Working — and Let Go of What’s Not

Not every post will be a hit. But over time, you’ll see patterns:

  • What topics get the most comments?

  • What types of images earn shares?

  • Which posts bring clicks to your website?

Use Facebook Insights to double down on what works and stop spinning your wheels on what doesn’t.

Facebook might not be as shiny as TikTok or as quick-hit as X, but it’s still one of the best places to build lasting relationships with readers.

With the right mix of presence, purpose, and personality, you can turn Facebook into a steady engine for book sales and loyal fans.

You don’t have to go viral. You just have to show up consistently — and be human.
