Prophecy: A Kayla Hicks Book Review
What is Prophecy about?
Dubbed ‘that weird Owens girl’ since grade school, Lucy can’t wait for her fresh start at college in the Fall. Instead, a mysterious threat forces her into hiding, where she is haunted by memories of her ancestors, to whom Lucy bears a striking resemblance, down to the crescent moon birthmark on the back of their necks.
As Lucy uncovers the secrets of her past, she is unwittingly thrust into a game of cat and mouse against an army of Gifted (people with supernatural abilities who can't die until their purpose is achieved). A game her family has been failing for centuries.
Luckily, Embry and Gabriel, two mysterious family friends, are also Gifted, and claim their purpose is to protect Lucy’s line. But as she gets to know them and her family’s history better, she wonders if their ultimate goal is to keep her safe...or to stop the man who’s after her?
Prophecy is the first book in this complete trilogy by Amanda Lynn Petrin. If you like urban fantasy series with strong heroines and a touch of history, you’ll love this absorbing paranormal read.
My Review
When we find Lucy, Owens, she is a person who has lost everyone near and dear to her. And then when two people show up in her life frequently after her grandmother's death as family friends, you get the impression that there is an underlying reason they are sticking around to watch over Lucy.
Flash forward to the end of the year when Lucy goes to prom, helps her best friend land the guy of her dreams, and ends up escaping through a bathroom window when a creepy ex-student chaperone comes onto her. She is rushed home by Gabriel who just happened to be outside the window waiting for her only to find out something bad is coming and Lucy needs to pack her things and leave.
I admit that this book had a promising start, pulling me in with the flashback from Lucy's childhood, however, then the book loses steam quite quickly.
The topic of the book was promising but unfortunately, all of the potential situations that were presented weren't explored and left the plot rather boring. As a reader I kept waiting for some action scenes to unfold as they tried to escape this evil force coming for Lucy, however, all they did was run, hide, and talk about how a fight was happening but didn't go into detail about it.
I understand that this is the beginning of a series, but the first book failed to grab me.
It does give off vibes for fans of Vampire Dairies and Legacies, however, so fans of those may enjoy aspects of this book.
I give this s 2 star review.
