Creating an Author Media Kit

Media kits help increase your book’s success at publication

One of the best ways to help the success of your book when it comes to aiding blogs and reviewers is to develop an author media kit.

An author media kit is basically all the information anyone needs about you the author and the book that is about to be released.

But, the great thing is that it’s broken down into sections so you don’t have to feel overwhelmed.

Author Biography

The first section you should have is the author’s biography.

And throughout this section be sure to include a little about your writing journey as a writer, a small personal element about yourself, and any notable accomplishments that you feel people would want to know about. Last but not least, any glowing reviews you have received from blogs or reviewers should be included at the end.

By having this section, you allow media such as blogs, podcasts, and more to pick and choose what they want to highlight about you.

Your Brand Story

This is where you want to tell people how you came to be a writer.

It doesn’t have to be long, but just enough to give them something extra about you as a writer.

Here is an example of mine:

High-Quality Images

Media is going to want to create marketing materials, cover images, and more for their upcoming interview or review of your work.

This is why it’s important to include some high-resolution cover images of your author’s photo and the book cover. Most likely they will grab these and show them in their marketing materials.

Book Details

Consider this a section that will give any media a small guide to every important detail about your book.

In this section you will want to include:

  • Title

  • Page count

  • Word count

  • Genre

  • Publication date

  • ISBN

  • Available formats

  • Book description

Press Release

Having a press release crafted ahead of time can prove useful when submitting your book release to news outlets and other media.

In your press release you want to have a headline planned, a sub-headline planned, and then the body of the press release. In addition to this, you will want to include contact information such as your phone number and email address and a high-quality photo of yourself and the book cover.

Here is an example of mine:

Sample Q &A Section

Having this small section will help you control the narrative and give the media a feel for what questions you are prepared to answer.

These questions can range from information about your writing process to more in-depth questions about your writing journey. And don’t forget to have some questions about your book.

Previous Work

Including a section of your previous work can save media a lot of time if you have a larger body of work.

My suggestion would be to list the books, their links, and their publication date.

For example, I am a multi-genre author, so I separated my books into sections like:

And then you will want to list any upcoming projects.

Contact Information

The last section you will want to include is your contact information.

  • Email

  • Phone Number

  • Author Website

  • Social Media Links

When authors create a media kit, they cut out the extra work for media and increase their chances of gathering interviews and reviews from bigger outlets.

Once you have this media kit ready, be sure to list it on your website and let people know where it is on social media.
